Ione Townsend began grassroots campaigning in Maine as a young mother for Senator George Mitchell, Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis and other Democratic candidates going door to door with two kids in tow. In 2008 she was involved in the first Barack Obama campaign as a volunteer in Pasco County with Elena McCullough. In 2012 she was a core team member of the Plant City Neighborhood Team for the reelection of the President and in 2014 she was a neighborhood team leader. She, with the support of her husband, headed the creation of the Plant City Area Progressives, Plant City Area Democratic Club (serving as Vice President and President) and Plant City Organizing for Action. She helped create and was a charter member of the Tampa Bay Chapter of Organizing for Action and the Lead in OFA Tampa Bay for the Affordable Care Act. In the 2014 election cycle the Plant City neighborhood team increased voter turnout from 2010 levels by 7-26 % in targeted and adjacent precincts. The Plant City Democratic Club was a leader within the State of Florida for conversions of door knocks to Vote by Mail applications.
